Which Martial Arts Style is the Right One for You?


There are many types of martial arts styles when it comes to choosing a style that’s right for you, but remember that the best martial arts style for you will be the one that you’d be happiest continuing. As a prospective student you’ll want to have an understanding of the style you’d like to pursue, goals that you’d like to reach, and choosing the right school and instructor.

Below are some examples of the type of research you may what to gather when searching for a martial arts style:

  • Karate

Karate, which translated means “empty hand,” originated in Okinawa, Japan and involves various punching, kicking, and elbow techniques with emphasis on attack deflection. Karate is a form that stresses maximum efficiency in regards to striking, not only focusing on the head, but other weak points of the body as well. In terms of physical conditioning Karate is a great martial art providing excellent all-around exercise with balanced muscle build.

  • Kung Fu

Kung Fu, which originated in China, is one of the most disciplined martial arts forms and utilizes the use of low stances and powerful blocks to throw opponents of balance and then strike. Kung Fu is another excellent martial arts style providing excellent full body workouts.

  • Taekwondo

Originating in Korea, Taekwondo is a martial art that combines both self-defense and attacks focusing on high kicks and quick hand movements. Based on the belief that the leg is the strongest limb, giving one the benefit of keeping their attacker at a distance while still having powerful attacks.

  • Jiu-Jitsu

A martial art that originated in Brazil, Jiu-Jitsu incorporates many different techniques to subdue attackers like, grappling, choke holds, hard striking, and joint locks with emphasis on using an attackers own force and strength against him. Jiu-Jitsu is considered by some to be the most complete martial arts techniques integrating striking, joint locks, chokes, and throws in its repertoire.

  • Muay Thai

Muay Thai, which is the most renowned form of kickboxing, originated in Thailand and is a martial art that incorporates the use punches, powerful kicks, knees, and elbows. Although kickboxing is a full body workout, there is some increased emphasis on leg strength.
