Karate Preparation Tips for Your Next Tournament

October 31, 2016

Martial Arts such as Karate, Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and MMA having been gaining increasing popularity as a sport around the world. With so many new and talented martial arts practitioners increasing the world over, there’s no wonder why so many enjoy the competitive aspect of martial arts as a sport.

One of the most important aspects of getting ready for any competition, as in any sport, is proper and consistent practice and preparation. All world-class athletes train extremely hard to be ready both physically and mentally for competition.

Below are some preparation tips to help you make sure you’re efficiently maximizing the time you have to prepare for your next Karate tournament, or any competition.

Karate Preparation Tips:
  • Knowing Your Tournament Date

Knowing the exact date of your tournament is an important step to making sure you have the proper time to prepare and schedule what you need to work on.

  • Practice, Practice, and more Practice

Although it’s cliché and entirely redundant, “practice makes perfect.” Competitors should practice at every opportunity when preparing for real competition, which should entail attending every class  and practicing at home to help improve any techniques or strengthen any weaknesses. Daily practice during the time leading to the competition will greatly help to improve your skill, endurance, strength, and confidence.

  • Proper Rest

Proper rest the night before your competition is another important step in making sure that both your mind and body are ready for the trials ahead. It’s even better if you can get yourself into a regular sleeping habit the week leading up to the competition. As an athlete you cannot perform at your best if you’re feeling tired at the start.

  • Find a Practice Partner

Finding a friend from class or another classmate of similar or higher rank can help tremendously in preparing for an upcoming tournament or competition. Practicing together will help reinforce your skills and push each other to improve.

  • Breathing

Another important preparation technique is proper breathing exercises. The practice of calm, steady breathing will help you to remain calm, focused, and will help to clear your mind when feeling nervousness.

  • Proper Diet

It’s good practice to begin a healthy diet the week leading up to the competition. This will help to reduce the chance of any stomach irritation before or during your competition. Remember to include food that will provide plenty of energy, while also remembering to stay hydrated to compensate for the amount of added practice you should be doing.
