6 Factors to Consider When Choosing a Martial Arts School

October 14, 2016

Martial arts can be an exciting and rewarding addition to one’s life, however, just like all major decisions you need to do the proper research before settling into the right martial arts studio for you or your child.

At the American Karate Institute, we believe the following 6 factors should be taken into consideration if you’re wondering how to choose a martial arts studio that’s right for you.

1. Expectations

First and foremost, when deciding on a martial arts studio the most important factor to consider is what you expect to get out of it. Studios tend to focus on one of two things; some focus primarily on self-defense and competition while others focus more on personal development and character building. What you decide to pursue is completely based on personal preference and there is no wrong decision.

2. Facility

A martial arts studio should be clean and organized. If they don’t look professional, most likely their services aren’t professional either. Trust your first instinct when you arrive at a studio. Remember it’s worth driving a little farther for a more professional environment.

3. Instructor

It’s important to research an instructor’s credentials, but being a “world champion” in martial arts doesn’t automatically translate into “great instructor”. An instructor should be personable, professional, and helpful. The instructor should take the time to make sure you understand the movements and provide one assistance as needed.

4. Students

Before selecting a studio, you should observe a few classes and the students. You want to look out for things, such as good discipline, uniform techniques and encouragement among the students.

5. Attitudes

If you get a bad feeling from the staff, instructor or students, trust your instincts and keep looking. Interactions between the instructor and the students can indicate the attitude of the studio. Mutual respect is essential for maintaining a positive atmosphere.

6. Finances

Most studios will offer free trial classes to make sure you are satisfied with their services before you pay for the full membership. Be aware of registration and insurances fees. It is up to you to determine what you feel is a reasonable and fair price for instruction. After some research, you will know who is asking too much.
