How Perspectives Have Changed on MMA for Kids

Over the last decade, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has been gaining popularity with adults, teenagers, and children. With prominent and outspoken fighters like Connor McGregor, Rhonda Rousey, Jon Jones, and many others, it’s no wonder that MMA has begun to appeal to kids. According to an report by ESPN, there are now 5.5 million teenager enrolled in MMA classes and another 3.2 million kids under the age of 13 that now participate in MMA training in the United States alone.

Many parents today are still conflicted about registering their children for MMA classes because of the obvious perception of the sheer physicality of the sport, fear of serious injury for their kids and the possibility of it leading their children to a path of aggression.

The Varying Opinions About MMA for Kids

According to some UFC supporters, MMA for kids doesn’t incorporate the type of violence you see on TV into their classes and can actually serve as an outlet for some children to help control and channel their aggression in a healthy and constructive way.

Others, like former MMA fighter and trainer Pat Miletich, say that they do not agree with the former statement because of their personal experience in MMA, stating “"I lived it, so I know what's involved and the damage that can be inflicted. The philosophy of martial arts is a search to better yourself, and pieces of that are missing in the MMA mentality. The goal should not be to pound on someone with your fists."

Many parents, however, are continuing to put their children into MMA classes because of the constant training and continuous exercise, which seem to increase their child’s confidence and motivation.
